A guided photo walk through the Terraine hills

When you think of Utah’s beauty, your mind might leap to red rock arches and alpine peaks — but some of the most captivating landscapes are right outside our back doors. The Terraine hills may not carry the fame of a national park, but they’re brimming with quiet wonder: grasses that catch the light just so, the delicate patterning of a beetle’s back, the hush of wings rising from sage. Join us for a short walk — just a quarter mile — led by nature photographer Scott Henderson into these hills to slow down, look closely, and reconnect with what’s been there all along. This is a workshop for photographers, curious wanderers, and anyone who’s ready to see beauty in small things. We’ll learn to capture what’s hidden in plain sight and how to move through the land in a way that lets it speak.

What to Expect:
We’ll be kneeling in the grass, crawling a bit, maybe brushing off a spider or two. There will be birdsong and wind. You might spot a snake. You’ll definitely spot something you’ve never noticed before. And we’ll be ready for it — cameras in hand, eyes wide open.

What You’ll Learn:

  • How to shift your camera settings to turn a snapshot into art
  • Framing and composition tips that help your subject pop
  • How to train your eye to notice what’s usually missed

Bring:

  • Your cell phone for identifying finds (iNaturalist or Google Lens work well)
  • Your camera + lens (under 150mm ideal) — just know how to adjust ISO/Shutter/Aperture (if you’re using your phone as a camera, make sure you can manually adjust shutter speed and focus)
  • Water, long pants, good shoes
  • Sunscreen, jacket — spring can be tricky
  • Please skip the bug spray if you can — we’re here to meet the bugs, not block them

This isn’t a hike — it’s a pause. A chance to meet the land a little more slowly. We’ll find stories in seed pods, mystery in tracks, and a bit of magic in every shadow.
